About Us

About Us

Our Approach

Our approach is individualised, recognising that no single therapeutic model or pathway is suitable for everyone. We draw on a range of evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy and other therapeutic interventions.

Our practice is informed by a bio-psychosocial framework and, where relevant and desired by the client, incorporates spiritual considerations. We consider the broader factors that may influence a person’s wellbeing, including relationships, life experiences, environment, identity, physical health and personal beliefs, and tailor our support accordingly.

About Us

Supporting Recovery and Growth

We understand that difficult experiences can affect the way people see themselves, relate to others and imagine their future. At Havilah, we provide a space for individuals to explore their experiences, make sense of challenges and identify the changes that matter most to them.
Support is focused not only on managing difficulties but also on strengthening self-understanding, recognising personal resources and developing practical skills for everyday life. We aim to support people as they move towards greater confidence, agency and a future that feels meaningful to them.

About Us

Our Fees and
Philosophy

We aim to make our services as accessible as possible by offering reasonable and competitive fees, with concessions available through a sliding income scale where appropriate.

Our user-pays philosophy reflects our belief that investing in personal support can be an important commitment to one’s own wellbeing and future. We recognise that each person’s circumstances are different and seek to balance accessibility with the need to maintain a sustainable, high-quality professional service.

About Us

Professional Standards and Accountability

Havilah is committed to practising with integrity, accountability and professionalism. As members of relevant professional associations, we work within applicable ethical standards, professional responsibilities and recognised practice frameworks.

We maintain and develop our professional knowledge through continuing professional development, training, research and technical reading, reflective practice and regular professional supervision. These processes support thoughtful decision-making, accountability and the ongoing quality of the services we provide.

Why Choose Us

Meet the Director and Principal Social Worker

Hello, I’m Susan Shelton, Founder, Principal Social Worker, and Counsellor at Havilah Social Work and Counselling Services.

I am a qualified Social Worker and Counsellor with a Graduate Diploma in Counselling and extensive experience across the mental health, family violence, social services, and disability sectors. Throughout my career, I have worked as a Support Worker, Case Manager, NDIS Support Coordinator, and Social Worker, supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges, trauma, adversity, and significant life transitions.

My professional experience includes working with the National Redress Scheme at Services Australia, where I supported survivors of institutional child sexual abuse through the redress process. I have also worked as an After Hours Support Worker with Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre, providing crisis support to women and children escaping domestic and family violence.

Before entering social work, I spent more than 15 years in the disability sector, supporting children, young people, and adults with diverse physical, intellectual, and sensory disabilities.

I am particularly passionate about supporting individuals affected by trauma, PTSD, complex trauma, grief and loss, domestic and family violence, emotional wellbeing, and personal growth. My approach is compassionate, trauma-informed, and strengths-based, with a commitment to empowering clients to heal, build resilience, and create meaningful, fulfilling lives.
